Bye, Bye Birdie

Bye, Bye Birdie

Going along with the Guys and Dolls brand, here is the first logo that I’ve done for Elk Ridge Middle school.

In late 2006 I was asked by my friend who is a teacher at Elk Ridge if I would design the logo for their school musical. At the time the musical program was a new thing for the school, and I wanted it to a cool and special logo.

I have seen Bye, Bye Birdie a couple of times and was well aware of the story and the elements that make up this production. I decided to make the logo look as if it were on a stare, and have the glitz of Hollywood. I wanted the Bye, Bye part to be a different element not only with the color but also with the font style.

After I had designed the logo I decided that for the background on all design elements I would leave it white. The white with all the negative space would draw your eye directly to the logo design as well as any other elements such as credits would jump off the page.

As this was the first design I did for Elk Ridge, as well as going to school at the same time I didn’t put a lot of effort into the branding and advertising aspect of this production. It wasn’t till August of 2007 when I learned of Guys and Dolls that I’ve decided to put my full effort into the branding. But now that I look back I will always make the effort to have the branding guide with every production that I do, whether it’s for Elk Ridge or not.

The design elements of this logo was the use of two fonts: Budmo Jiggler; this was used as the main part of the logo. The lips that are over the “I” were actually my friends lips that she kissed on a piece of paper which I then scanned. The bye, bye font was Handhands.

After I designed the BIRDIE part of the logo I took it into Photoshop and turned it upside down and flipped it so that once I faded it I could take it back into Illustrator where it would go under the Birdie part to make it look like it had a reflection. I then added shadows behind the logo to give it depth and the illusion that it stood up to give the reflection.

This finial design was the result of ten design concepts. Guys and Dolls was the result of fifteen.

I would love it if you left me feedback or any comments that you have about this design. And if you have any questions on how I did this design. Thank you so much for taking the time to explore this page.
